Age Spots

Age spots, often referred to as sun spots or liver spots, are caused by excessive sun exposure, which in most cases has occurred earlier in life. These spots are flat and brown, tan or sometimes black in colour and start to show as we enter our 30’s, when the pigment cells (melanocytes) in the skin become over active and produce high concentrations of melanin, due to the damage caused by previous sun exposure.

Age spots are harmless and can appear anywhere on the body. They are most common on people with light coloured skin and found most frequently on areas of the body that have been regularly exposed to the sun, for example the face, hands and neck. When they first show they can look like freckles and many people quite like this appearance. However, with time they will present with a muddy appearance, which is less attractive.

Age spots are easily treatable with results usually showing from 3 weeks onwards. Treatment recommendations will be tailored to your individual condition and the location of the age spots on your body.
