Acne Scarring

Acne scars are the indentations or marks that may be left on the skin from spots, blackheads, whiteheads or cysts following an outbreak of acne. They may also present themselves as discolouration on the skin and are often mistaken for acne itself.

Acne scarring occurs most frequently when a cyst or nodule bursts, damaging the surrounding skin and causing the scar to form. There are 3 main types of acne scars, each with their own characteristics. ‘Rolling scars’ give the skin a rolling or uneven appearance, ‘icepick’ scars usually appear as deep punctures in the skin and ‘boxcar scars’ are oval or round shaped depressions or dents in the skin’s surface.

Contrary to popular opinion, acne scars can usually be treated fairly easily and with excellent results. However, treatment can only take place once the acne itself has been controlled effectively.

Treatment options will be advised based on your individual skin condition and include dermapen to break down the scars so they can heal in a uniform way, mesotherapy or skin boosters to help inflate indentations in the skin, Harmony IPL  to address discolouration/redness and prescription skincare to manage colour and texture changes. Often a combination of treatments is recommended to achieve optimum results.
